Green ARC (Affordable Residential Challenge) - Urban Social Housing 2010

In Malaysia there is an increasing awareness of green building (increasing fuel prices and living costs, limitation of natural resources and the threat of environmental damages). However, Malaysia is still hesitant when it comes to the implementation of the green building concept (BCI survey, 2007). Commercial buildings, for example rely heavily on mechanical air conditioning throughout the day, because the buildings are not designed to
be responsive to the tropical climate.

Some of the biggest barriers for green construction are the high upfront costs as well as insufficient awareness and education among the key players in the industry. Further and continuous efforts are needed to create a positive culture towards more sustainability.

These concerns with sustainable development have motivated the Alliance Française de Kuala Lumpur, the Goethe Institute Malaysia, the Architecture Department of Universiti Malaya, and Sime Darby Property to initiate the Green Affordable Residential Challenge, a competition based green architectural housing project:

Invitation to Year 4-5 advanced architecture students and students who study housing, building, planning or any other related disciplines and are presently enrolled fulltime in advance degree or advance diploma level courses (Part II LAM or equivalent) at Malaysian Tertiary Institutions may
formulate and design affordable green housing with social infrastructure (e.g. encounter areas like playgrounds, sporting facilities etc.), flexible space (min. three bedrooms and two bathrooms), at an estimated cost of below RM100,000 per unit/apartment, in a central urban area of high density medium rise (5-8 stories) and with consideration of the Malaysian Green Building Index.

The competition will be supported by a lecture series that is intended to provide information and technical know-how to participants. The lectures will be held on Sat, 17 July, Sat, 21 August, Sat, 25 September, and Sat, 16 October by local, French and German experts who will focus on environmentally friendly design and construction that takes the social, psychological, renewable and sustainable resources into consideration.

At the end of the competition period, an exhibition will be held. The NST Property Times will accompany the progress of the project. In partnership with Sime Darby it is hoped that an architectural showcase or even a real model flat may be developed to provide a good case study for students at the university and for other potential clients.
